On 3rd and 4th of February 2016 Johanne Couldrey and I invited the public to help us freeform crochet a Totem Pole at 'Makers' Month' in the Forum. Between us we created a playful and calm atmosphere where people felt at ease to have a go at crocheting without following any patterns. We provided a varied size of yarns and hooks, from 5mm to 25mm, which I think helped individual inventiveness due to the scale of the tools and materials being a change to what they were used to. Playing with different stitches to form shapes or imaginary animals, which, similar to the totem poles of North America, told a story about all who took part. I totally loved demonstrating the nature of freeform doodling in yarn and creating a communal piece. You can visit the forum to see 'Totem' in their gallery space until 27th February 2016.
